OF SUPER DC-8 SERIES 61-63PF AIRCRAFT WHICH WERE CONVERTED | ![]() |
Listed below are all DC-8 Super 70 Aircraft Conversions - Listed by Individual Aircraft. Many DC-8 70s were initially converted for passenger use and then later converted again for cargo use only. Thus I used two sets of columns to reflect when both types of conversions took place.
There was a total of 110 DC-8 Super 60 Aircraft converted into DC-8 Super 70 Aircraft. All DC-8-70 model subtypes match exactly to the DC-8-60 model subtypes which they were upgraded from: a DC-8-61 becomes a DC-8-71, a DC-8-62AF becomes a DC-8-72AF, a DC-8-63CF becomes a DC-8-73CF, etc. Other than a few DC-8-72s which are still flying in passenger configurations for corporate, private, government VIP and very limited charter services (by Air Transport International - ATI), all other passenger versions of the DC-8 Super 70s have been converted into freighters, and there are no airlines currently using -any- version of the DC-8 in scheduled passenger services. However, the DC-8 Super 70s, as well as a few earlier versions of the DC-8 that have been "hush kitted" to meet noise regulations, still have a bright future operating for the various cargo airlines throughout the world. In fact, nearly half of the 110 DC-8-70 conversions (47 to be exact) are still in service with United Parcel Service (UPS) and UPS has no immediate plans to retire them.
