Photo taken at NASA's
Ames Research Center, near San Francisco, in 1994. During this time the DC-8-72
was Registered N717NA. Some people have wondered why the change in Registration
from N717NA to N817NA? The Answer is - each of NASA's Centers has it's own
number. The Ames Center is #7 & thus the N717NA
Registration Number. When the DC-8 was reassigned to NASA's Dryden Center
in California's Mojave Desert, which is #8, the Registration Number was changed
to N817NA.

The NASA Eight Flying Over The California Desert
Taken in July 2004
from a Lockheed P-3 while flying at 500 feet (mean sea level) over New England.
These aircraft were flying in formation which is a bit slow for the DC-8 but
it is a very versatile airplane!
