Model History:
Produced in the late 1950s or early 1960s by the Douglas Aircraft
Model Shop or Marketing Aids (Subcontractor for Douglas for Model
Production). Acquired on February 25, 2002 from My Friend Ira Kuperstein
in a Trade.
Note:
November 2005 - I decided to mount this Alitalia Douglas
Factory Model on the Fono Nicci Stand which was previously mounted
to my Aeronaves de Mexico Fono Nicci Model. I then placed the Aeronaves
DC-8 on a standard Douglas Factory Model type stand. I did this
because the Fono Nicci stand was made specifically for Alitalia
& highlights the Country of Italy right on it's front and thus
is more appropriate for the Alitalia Model rather than the Aeronaves
model. Many thanks to my friend Anthony for
suggesting this change for the better.
Alitalia's
DC-8 History: Alitalia, the Flag Carrier for Italy, was an
Original Delivery Customer of the Douglas DC-8. Alitalia took delivery
of 4 DC-8-42s (later converted to more advanced DC-8-43s) and 11
DC-8-43s - both types which were powered by 4 Rolls Royce Conway
Bypass Engines - one of the earliest types of commercial turbo-fan
engines. They inaugurated their DC-8 service on June 1, 1960 between
New York - Idlewild (now JFK) - Milan - Rome and Idlewild - London-
Rome. In the late 1960s Alitalia took delivery of 9 DC-8 Super 62s
and 2 DC-8-62CFs (Convertible Freighters) and utilized these ultra
long range aircraft into the 1980s.
