"The
Super 63, largest of the Super Sixty Series, is a large-capacity
transport with intercontinental range. It combines the length
and payload capacity of the Super 61 with the aerodynamic and
power plant improvements of the Super 62.
Wingspan
of the Super 63 is the same as the Super 62 but six feet greater
than that of the Super 61, and it has a larger fuel capacity and
25,000 pounds greater permissible takeoff weight than that of
the Super 61.
To
better distribute the increased weight -- a maximum of 350,000
pounds for takeoff -- the tread of the main landing gear is wider
and the tire size larger than on earlier model DC-8s.
The
majority of Super 63s are powered by four JT3D-7 jet engines having
19,000 pounds thrust each.
The
Super 63 can carry its maximum capacity of 259 passengers and
their baggage 4500 statute miles or transport lesser loads for
greater distances. Direct operating cost of the Super 63 is less
than .6 cents per seat-mile.
All-cargo
models of the Super 63 can haul more than 118,000 pounds of bulk
freight.
The
first Super 63 made it's maiden flight April 10, 1967. First delivery
to an airline [KLM Royal Dutch Airlines] occurred July 15, 1967,
and it was introduced into commercial service on July 27, 1967.
The
Super 63F, a convertible cargo-passenger version, was certified
June 10, 1968, and delivered to Seaboard World Airlines on June
21, 1968. It was introduced into service later that month."
