Northwest's DC-8 History: Northwest Orient was an Original Delivery Customer of the DC-8. Northwest received it's first DC-8-32 (N801US) on May 18, 1960 and inaugurated their first "DC-8C Polar Imperial Service" from New York Idlewild (now JFK) - Anchorage - Tokyo on July 8, 1960. Originally, Northwest had ordered 10 DC-8-32s (of which they actually took delivery of five) and planned to use them for long haul international routes and the Boeing 720B for the shorter domestic routes. The first 2 DC-8s were delivered in the above livery. The last 3 DC-8s were delivered in an updated (and Final) livery. Click here to see a NW DC-8-32 Model in the Final Colors. In 1962 Northwest decided to phase out it's DC-8s in favor of the Boeing 707-351B and all DC-8s were phased out by July, 1964. Northwest thus set the records for being the Shortest Original Operator of the DC-8 with just 4 years of service (1960-1964) -and- was also the First Original Operator to Retire the DC-8.
