TAI's DC-8 History: Transports Aeriens Intercontinentaux (TAI), the self proclaimed "Luxury Airline of France," was an Original Factory Delivery Customer of the DC-8. They took delivery of their first DC-8 (DC-8-33 F-BIUY) in July 1960 and two additional DC-8s in 1961. Click Here to See TAI's DC-8 Fleet Information. TAI had an excellent route system from France to the French overseas provinces and former colonies, primarily in the Orient and South Pacific, which the long range DC-8 would be excellent for. TAI had a 'sister' company named Union Aeromaritime de Transport (UAT) which also had an excellent route system from France to Central & Southern Africa. (Click Here to See a UAT DC-8-32 Model) These two independent airlines merged on October 1, 1963 to become Union de Transports Aeriens or UTA French Airlines which became the principal competition for government owned Air France.
